Hours of Service (HOS) Compliance / Electronic Onboard Recorder (EOBR)

Request live demo

To reduce driver fatigue and increase overall safety, federal regulations in the USA and Canada require all drivers of commercial vehicles, except emergency response vehicles, to maintain variations of hours of service (HOS) driver logs. In cases where carriers have made serious violations, the use of an electronic on board recorder (EOBR) may be mandatory.

There are many reasons for a motor carrier to adopt an EOBR however:

  • Organizations and drivers have a shared responsibility
  • EOBR can be more efficient and accurate than paper hours of service logs
  • Falsification tactics are more difficult to achieve
  • Carrier can plan load assignments and manage driver schedules better
  • Drivers can be alerted before they incur a compliancy issue

FleetPulse® Hours of Service Reporting Application extracts data from the FleetPulse VIU unit (installed in vehicle) and populates the electronic log forms with key driving information. This step reduces data entry by the driver and ensures more accurate log information.

“…drivers with electronic logs spend about 20 minutes less time per day recording HOS than do drivers with paper logs. Fleet managers with fleets using electronic HOS recorders save an additional 20 minutes per driver per month in time needed to administer HOS records...”

The PDA console allows the driver to assign driving codes to their hours (off duty, sleeper, driving, on duty/not driving) and verify data before submitting. The driver will be prompted to electronically sign and lock the logs then download the data to the HOS application. Helping to inhibit falsification tactics, FleetPulse verifies user identification values to ensure that multiple identities are not used during log submissions.

As a reference tool, FleetPulse also allows the driver to check how many hours are left before a compliancy issue is encountered.
